A magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea southwest of the Cayman Islands on Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Several islands and countries urged coastal residents to move inland due to a potential tsunami threat.
The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed there was no tsunami threat to the U.S. mainland but issued a tsunami advisory for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The quake hit at 6:23 p.m. local time, with a depth of 10 kilometers. Its epicenter was located 130 miles (209 kilometers) south-southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands.
Hazard Management Cayman Islands advised coastal residents to move inland and to higher ground, warning of potential wave heights between 0.3 and 1 meter.
Puerto Rico Gov. Jenniffer González Colón stated she is in contact with emergency agencies regarding the tsunami advisory but did not recommend evacuations.
